-Florida’s Adoption of the Social Studies Techbook and Tennessee’s Adoption of the Science Techbook Continue Trend of Nationwide Approval of Award-Winning Digital Textbooks-

Silver Spring, Md. (November 1, 2017) – Recently, Florida and Tennessee joined eleven other states nationwide in adopting Discovery Education’s award-winning digital textbook series for classroom use.  Following an intensive review process, Florida’s Commissioner of Education, as recommended by the state’s Instructional Materials Reviewers, approved the adoption of the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook™, while the Tennessee Board of Education approved the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ for statewide use on the recommendation of the state’s Instructional Materials Quality Commission.

With Florida’s approval of the Social Studies Techbook’s Civics, United States History, and World History courses and Tennessee’s adoption of the Science Techbook’s K-8, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses, school districts in both states are now able to purchase and integrate these Techbooks into teaching and learning.  Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that support a comprehensive curriculum, are aligned to rigorous standards, and are updated regularly at no cost. The Techbook series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. In addition, the Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips.

The Social Studies Techbook series adopted in Florida uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps, and more.

Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the 5E model, the Discovery Education Science Techbook adopted in Tennessee helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities.  In addition, a host of new STEM/STEAM resources have recently been integrated into the Science Techbook which encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems.

“Discovery Education is grateful to the educators and state administrators in both Florida and Tennessee who painstakingly evaluated and reviewed Discovery Education’s Techbooks as part of their adoption process,” said Coni Rechner, Discovery Education Senior Vice President of National Partnerships.  “Our Techbooks empower teachers to improve academic achievement as they introduce students to people, places, and ideas they might not otherwise experience.  We look forward to working with school systems in Florida, Tennessee, and across the country as they build immersive digital learning environments that support the success of all learners.”
