Award-Winning Social Studies Techbook to be Integrated into 8th Grade Classrooms Districtwide

Silver Spring, MD. (October 17, 2017) – Texas’ Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced the launch of a new partnership focused on helping students prepare for an active civic life. Through this new relationship, CCISD educators will soon begin integrating Discovery Education’s award-winning Social Studies Techbook™ into teaching and learning in 8th grade classrooms districtwide.

Committed to developing hearts and minds, CCISD serves over 38,000 students at 59 campuses within 68 square miles. With a mission to graduate lifelong learners prepared to continue their education, enter the world of work, and be productive citizens, CCISD enjoys an outstanding reputation as a strong school system focused on excellence in education.

Seeking to continue the district’s tradition of innovation in education, CCISD has embarked on an effort to prepare students for an active civic life by integrating high quality digital content into social studies teaching and learning. To kick start this effort, CCISD’s 8th grade educators will be empowered with Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook to create challenging and engaging instructional experiences that bring historical events, social concepts, and cultural phenomena to life in their classrooms.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost. The series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in one-to-one or one-to-many configurations and in any instructional environment.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps and informational texts. The Social Studies Techbook is organized around complex Essential Questions that students use to guide their inquiry, analyze issues, and propose solutions to better understand their world.   Aligned with the National Council for the Social Studies’ C3 Framework, the Social Studies Techbook helps students develop key literacy and writing skills and provides a multitude of resources to young people for college, careers, and civic life.  Currently, Discovery Education Techbooks are used by more than 3 million students in all 50 U.S. states and several Canadian provinces.

“The talented educators at CCISD are dedicated to preparing our students to become active participants in our democratic society,” said Corpus Christi Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “We believe that providing robust social studies lessons in an engaging digital environment powered by Discovery Education will transform students’ perception of their role as participants in civic life and prepare them for success beyond the classroom.”

The Discovery Education Community will also aid CCISD’s educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored to collaborate with CCISD on their effort to create dynamic social studies learning experiences that help students learn more about their role in society,” said Discovery Education Director of Education Partnerships Phillip Mikula. “We look forward to supporting Superintendent Hernandez and his wonderful team of educators and administrators across the district as we begin this exciting project.”
